O’ahu, Hawaii: A Piece of Paradise That Has It All

Jules, travel blogger, mother and pilot wife, zip-lining in Oahu, Hawaii

As a person who desires to see as much of the world as I can in my lifetime, there are not many places that give me a deep desire to return over and over again because it feels like I’m missing out on seeing a new corner of the world. Anyone else?

However, Hawaii is one of those places that I would go back to over and over and over again.

I’ve been lucky enough to have been to O’ahu twice now, once on our honeymoon in 2013 and again at the beginning of 2024 on a total spur of the moment opportunity for a total of 3 days, each trip being completely different than the other. Your travel plans can include a relaxing beach vacation, an excursion filled adventure or a historical getaway. If you are planning a trip to this piece of paradise, consider these MUST TRY experiences and food recommendations below!

Turtle Bay Resort

When we came to this beautiful island for our honeymoon in November of 2013, we stayed at the Turtle Bay Resort on the North Shore where they filmed Forgetting Sarah Marshall. We rented a jeep at the airport and took the beautiful hour long drive to the resort. After a six month engagement and planning a whirlwind wedding, we wanted nothing more than to relax and enjoy our time together. We did minimal exploring outside of the resort, zero hikes (my current self actually feels like slapping my past self for that) and did our best to not fall asleep at dinner! Adjusting to the time difference is very real and is something you should factor in!

We did some snorkeling within the resort, which I learned is way harder than it looks and wasn’t my favorite activity, but it was free and was offered daily as a part of your stay. We did a standup paddle board lesson on a beach that can only be accessed through the resort, a hot spot for filming movies. We saw several turtles during this excursion which was a big highlight of me. If you are a golfer, look no further. The Turtle Bay Resort has their Arnold Palmer Championship course, an 18-hole putting course and a three hole Par-3 course so they can accommodate skill ranges from elite to family-friendly.

Hale Koa Hotel

This is for all military members on Active Duty, Reserve, National Guard, Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Space Force, Coast Guard and Cadets of Armed Forces Academies. I have not personally stayed here yet, but have eaten at this resort and attended the Hale Koa Luau show which was fantastic! You can find affordable hotel room rates, the beach is huge compared to most hotels in Waikiki, and there are lots of things to do both inside the resort and within walking distance.

Hiking Trails

O’ahu is known for the history of Pearl Harbor, the surfing and its beautiful beaches, but seeing the island from the view of their trails allows its natural wonder to shine.

Koko Crater Railway Trail

The start of Koko Crater Railway Trail

This is the first trail I conquered and thankfully I did it with a group of friends. If I’m being honest, I never would have finished if my friend Kim wasn’t at the top waiting for me. This trail is not for everyone as it is very steep and can challenge even those who are not afraid of heights into wondering if it’s worth it. It is, but you still wonder.

The trail heads up 990 feet at a very steep incline with 1,048 railway ties to climb. There are a few spots where you can take “the easy way” and climb over rocks and shrub vs the “bridge”, which I most certainly did! Although it is a short hike of 1.4 miles, it is a strenuous one and could challenge anyone who considers themselves elite in the fitness area. Yet, when you make it to the top and take in the breath-taking views, you pat yourself on the back for overcoming something you didn’t think was possible and start the slower descent back down! You can do hard things, especially with badass friends!

Moana Falls Trail

This is a much easier trail to conquer with stunning views, streams and waterfalls. I LOVED this trail and would love to go back and explore more if I get another chance!

Other Must See Trails I Need to Come Back For:

I only got on two hikes in the three days I was in O’ahu this last time, however, these trails are still on my list for when I return!

  • Diamond Head – book your parking reservation ahead of time as an out of state resident or you won’t be able to get in
  • Lanikai Pillbox Trail – a VERY adventurous option with sections that require crawling and no guard rails
  • Ka’au Crater Trail – a popular choice for jungle and waterfall chasing

Kuala Ranch Tours – Jurassic Park

If you want to be immersed into the scenes of Jurassic Park, look no farther than Kuala Ranch Tours!

My husband and I had an opportunity to do a zip-lining tour, taking in the sights where they filmed the Jurassic Park movies. I had never zip-lined before so to tell you that I was nervous was an understatement. However, as you’ll see across many of my blogs, I encourage you to step outside your comfort zone and live in the moment if you can. We get one shot at this life and I don’t wanna play: woulda, coulda, shoulda.

It was an exhilarating experience that I definitely had to overcome a little fear at times, however, I truly loved this adventure. I felt safe the entire time, our guides were hilarious and kept us both moving through the different lines while showing us all the cool movie scenes from the Jurassic Park series.

If zip-lining is a little too outside your comfort zone or is physically not available to you, the ranch offers many options to take in the sights like an adventure jeep tour through jurassic valley, Hollywood movie bus tours, e-bike tours, horseback riding (if that’s your jam – you will soon find out it is not mine), UTV rides, beach adventures and SO MUCH MORE!

Don’t Miss These Spots

I did. I have not been to these locations, but these have come highly recommended from a friend who traveled to this magical island in the last year and were considered their TOP recommendations for when I return! This is what they said:

  • Makapu’u Point Lighthouse: “An early morning hike to this lighthouse was energizing. On a smooth paved trail, we were fully immersed in Oahu’s natural wonders. The panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, included the islands of Molokai, Lanai and Maui. Look for the World War II memorial plaque for a touch of the historical significance of this landmark.”
  • Snorkeling at Hanauma Bay: “Snorkeling at Hanauma Bay was perfect for novice snorkelers. With limits on daily attendance, soft white sand, calm waters, and lush vegetation surrounding the crater walls; relaxation came easily!”
  • Pearl Harbor and Ford Island: “To honor, remember, and reflect; a visit to Pearl Harbor and Ford Island will allow you the space to become fully immersed the events leading to the United States’ engagement in World War II.” ***Book tickets ahead of time exactly 24 hours before you want to go!
  • Self-Guided Circle Island Driving Tour: “A way to explore the locations that most interest you at your own pace. Make sure you start early, refer to a well labeled tourist map, and take time to enjoy the widely varying geography of O’ahu. Lots of sea glass stops along the way for all you hunters!”

For those of us on the east coast, this is a LONG trip! When you go, you want to make the MOST out of your experience because chances are, you won’t get the chance every year to come back, if ever. I compiled a list of my favorite items I brought with me that helped with both the long day of travel and helped make the most out of my experiences!

Food & Drink

I wish I had taken more pictures to share with you, but you cannot go wrong when eating in Hawaii! I am a big advocate for trying the local cuisine when traveling because I feel like it is part of the experience. While you are here, please don’t sleep on these local dishes or drinks!

  • Coffee – you’ll need this for adjusting to the time!
  • Pineapple Mimosa – you’ll never have another one with orange juice, bet.
  • Açai Bowls – I had my first one here and they are so much more than a trend here. They are beautiful, filling and divine.
  • Poke Bowls
  • Kalua Pork
  • Fish – so fresh, so good
  • Shave Ice
  • Mai Tai’s – they are not normally my drink of choice, but here they just make sense!

Clearing Customs & Agriculture

Both entering and exiting Hawaii come with customs and agriculture rules that are strictly enforced. When boarding your flight to Hawaii, be mindful of what snacks you pack. You must declare any plants, animals or agriculture products you have brought with you to prevent the invasion of invasive species.

On your journey home, before you even step foot in the airport, you must clear agriculture customs at the door. They run your luggage and bags through a screening system so please don’t forget that there are certain things they want to remain on the island.

You cannot return to the mainland with the following items:

  • Fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs
  • Cotton/cotton balls
  • Fresh flowers of jade vine, and Mauna Loa
  • Any plants in soil
  • Cactus plants or cactus plant parts
  • Mock orange
  • Seeds with fruit clinging and fresh seed pods
  • Sugarcane
  • Live insects and snails
  • No soil

If you want more in-depth information on what you can or cannot bring, please check out the USDA Website for up-to-date information!

Surfing at Waikiki Beach, in Oahu Hawaii

Are you dreaming or are you planning? I’m doing both if I’m being perfectly honest. After two trips, there is still so much left to explore, not including the other islands this state has to offer. You can find a secluded beach resort or be right in the city where the hottest stores line the greatest beaches. You can attend shows, eat amazing food, and take time to appreciate both the current military presence and the historical significance this state has had on our past. Whether you’re stationed at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam Air Force Base, knowing all the inside scoop or you’re planning your first, second or third trip to the islands, tell me what you’re doing! Let’s keep the list, the dreams and the planning going. Aloha!

Thanks for stopping in! Let’s stay connected and see the world together!
